Stepping into a full-time music LTO across two schools and teaching every class from Grade 1–8 was an incredibly rewarding experience, but also one that came with a steep learning curve. Managing so many classes, age groups, student needs, instruments, routines, and classroom dynamics could have easily felt overwhelming, but the mentorship and support I received from Carolin made all the difference.
Throughout my time in the role, she provided ongoing guidance, encouragement, and practical strategies that helped me grow both in confidence and in my ability to successfully run a large-scale music program. She supported me with long-range planning, lesson organization, assessment strategies, classroom management techniques, and developmentally appropriate instruction across multiple grade levels.
During the LTO, I taught everything from NUVO woodwind instruments with intermediates, to ukuleles with juniors, and recorders, boomwhackers, xylophones, and drums with the primary grades. She coached me on how to introduce and manage instruments effectively, establish routines and expectations, maintain student engagement, and navigate the unique challenges that come with teaching music to large groups of students with diverse learning needs.
One of the most valuable aspects of her mentorship was the incredible collection of resources, materials, and organizational systems she shared with me. From lesson plans and assessment tools to visual supports, classroom routines, and behaviour management strategies, she provided resources that were practical, easy to implement, and incredibly effective.
Beyond classroom instruction, she also mentored me in the broader leadership role that music educators often take on within a school community. I learned so much about organizing extracurricular opportunities such as choir, leadership initiatives, and Battle of the Books, as well as supporting large school-wide events like character award assemblies. Her approach consistently emphasized student voice, community-building, and meaningful inclusion of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion through music and the arts.
What stood out most was Carolin’s ability to mentor with patience, positivity, and genuine care. She understands the realities of teaching and has a unique ability to support educators in ways that are both encouraging and highly practical. Her coaching would be incredibly valuable for any educator or school leader stepping into a music role, especially those without a strong music background, because she not only helps build knowledge and skills, but also confidence.

Carolin’s teaching style gives students autonomy when creating personal work and helps fine tune to help prepare for class presentations, school assemblies, musicals and auditions. Carolin helps educators and students learn about the arts - how to teach, how to play and how to perform! She is creating confidence in classrooms through her arts program for everyone involved!
